The
Martínez Bujanda family have always had a very individual approach
to wine making. The original winery near Oyon, that Joaquin Martínez
Bujanda began in 1889, is now a museum and a great tribute to his memory.
It houses one
of the finest displays of wine making in Spain. Every item has been restored
to become an object of beauty, with gleaming brass, copper and the fine
patina of old, well-used wood.
Each item also symbolizes
the Martínez Bujanda family's constant search for more effective and more
efficient production methods. In that sense, little has changed today.
The family are as demanding and creative as ever, never accepting that
a style of wine is good
enough simply because it's the fashion of the day. They integrate both
new and time-honored tradition in order to protect and enhance the enviable
reputation they have for high quality wines of distinctive character.
The
new winery, that was turned into a state-of-the-art complex in 1984, is
one of the most modern in Europe, and was originally designed and built
by Jesús Martínez Bujanda Jr., the fourth generation to
run the business. Here only grapes harvested from the family's own vineyards
are crafted into young, fresh wines that carry the Valdemar name, along
with the vibrant and elegant Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva of Conde
de Valdemar. Jesús Sr. has retired now and still keeps a watchful
eye over and their sister Pilar. plantings, while the bodega is run by
his sons Jesús Jr. and Carlos
